We also decided to set up two vermiculture bins with some of the composted manure utilizing the already existing worms. We have been wanting to get this project going for some time but since the whole family seems to be struggling with stamina issues and brain fog so many of these things simply have not gotten done. We are learning to slow ourselves down and work at accomplishing the task in front of us. One thing at a time.
I have always been interested in vermiculture and did dabble with it years ago. This time around, I am thinking about it as a supplemental feed for the chickens and of course the by-product to enrich my soil. There is a neat product out there called a Worm Inn for those that might be interested in this topic but don't want to hassle with a bin. They are made out of backpack material. The other day I bought a zipper tote bag made out of this material at the Salvation Army for $1 and we started a few worms in that. (The goal of course is always to multiply your worms as quickly as possible. ) We are pleased with how this small experiment has worked for us.
In addition, we just stocked two bins in the basement from the manure and worms we collected yesterday. Mid Kid has been taking care of the bag and already seems to have a good feel for the needed moisture levels, etc. she too has had an interest in vermiculture for years, so she is going to be tasked with the care of the worms.
Mid Kid has been sick all week. That was to be expected after her weekend away with people from all over the mid west. She is beginning to smile again so I believe the worst of it about over. She has utilized her time well and has almost completed a knitting project. When she gets all better she has some sewing work for a local lady.
We had a predator get one of our meat birds the other night. We suspected a coon so a trap was set for him but so far it has not come back. What ever it was reached inside the coop and got a paw hold on one of the small birds and ripped one of its wings off. So from the total order I think we are down five birds.
I am so thankful for the mostly mild temperatures we have been having this fall. We ordered our meat birds a bit late and I was afraid (and still am) that it will get cold and that it will be next to impossible to get these little guys fattened up for the freezer.
I am already thinking forward to spring and the next batch...and the plans for turkeys! But that is not accomplishing the tasks at hand!! So with that thought I am off to do the next thing in front of me that needs doing.
