It was evening and I remember that I wanted to cut down the catnip patch so I could get it dried in time to make more cat toys for next week's farmers market. So I head out with my scissors, I rounded the south side of the garage and there was this sound that sounded like wind. I looked up at the trees and everything was still. I looked to the west and nothing looked out of the ordinary. Maybe there was a light drizzle but really nothing one could see. So I considered that the sound might be road noise from the highway, but really it sounded like rain.
I proceeded to cut down the catnip the noise got louder. After finishing my job I headed back to the house and as I rounded the end of the line of lilacs, I could now see rain over 1/2 of a mile away. It sounded like standing out in the rain except it was raining in the distance.
I went in and called the family to come out and experience this odd occurrence. We all agreed it was the strangest thing. The stillness of the air and the roar of rain over a 1/2 of a mile away. We stood there and waited for it to come our way but it didn't. We came into the house and I tied up the catnip to dry. I looked out to the south after that chore and it was still raining over there....
That rain never did make it to our house. It just rained over there for a better part of an hour. As if the rain cloud was not moving. While we did get a light drizzle during the wee hours on Sunday, this morning when we went to church we drove past the area with the stationary cloud and it was obvious that they had gotten that extra hour of rain.
I have never experience anything like that before. I have heard rain many times come upon me but never that loud from such a distance away. The air was so still that the sound of the heavy rain traveled from such a distance. I know the experience got lost in the telling but I still wanted to share it.
