For years now, I have considered a blog to sort of keep in touch with my family and friends. This year might be the year. We have just come through a very long and difficult winter. This is a new season and we will have new stories to tell with the spring rains and warm summer days. So please come along with us and listen to our story.
Late last fall, there was a new red roof put on the house. Prior to this the house had slate….the antiquity of slate seemed so right at first but with time, it was decided to replace the old crumbling slate with something new and different.
We will continue to work two farmers markets this year. With that we have been asked to increase our produce….so we are attempting to plant our entire garden block. And I am beginning to wonder if I am insane to even consider this….
In the midst of this, we have a thistle problem that we must conquer, and while I am not usually in favor of using herbicide, thistles are another matter….So we have sprayed and will spray again until we get these invasive weeds out of our produce ground. I’ve spent two to three years trying to control them with a hoe only to learn that thistles grow from the roots and when you cut them off it causes the root to double its effort.
With the wet spring, we have a lot of grass so I have used the old compost in the bins and mixed it with the freshly cut grass and by next weekend, I will have a large amount of fresh dirt to start building the soil up in the garden…..
Over the past two to three years we have lost a lot of our rhubarb. We are thankful that we did not lose it all….we will be dividing plants and attempting to rebuild on that front.
We have a lot of cleaning to be done around the place and are going to attempt to get our kitchen remodeled this summer…or at least underway. With Dad needing so much attention last year, much went undone.
By the way, Dad is doing well for a man with stage four cancer and 90 years old. For this we are thankful.
Well, until next time…..
