This afternoon found Hubby and I packaging the meat birds. We arrived back here on Monday night after two days on the road. Promptly on Tuesday morning, Hubby, mid-kid, and #3 began butchering chickens. All 46 of them in one day was a huge job and we were a bit afraid that we were not going to be able to get them all in the empty refrigerator for getting them cooled down. And then there was the worry about getting them all to fit in the freezers…..
I bought the pleated Food Saver bags for the chickens and Hubby hated them because they really don’t work as well. While it is much easier to get the bird into the bag the actually sealing process is more difficult and is not quite as efficient as when using the straight bags. And because you have to cut the bags 5 inches longer, we think that next time we will just use the standard bags. In the long run, it will probably save us money and get us a better long term storage.
Today has found Mid-kid feeling a bit better but nowhere near up to full speed. She has eaten a bit better today but still kind of soft on what appeals to her. She has stayed fairly low keyed and rested…in her bed instead of in the middle of the holiday festivities.
After the long drive up here, the butchering of birds, having a Merry Christmas, and then finishing up the chicken processing, we are all about ready to call it a week. None of us feel the most healthy at the moment and we all look forward to a long winter’s nap.
