Hubby worked on getting the irrigation hoses in place today. Amazing how fast it can go from mud to bricks!!! On a year like this it is imperative to keep the roots of the plants moist in order to keep them from getting root bound in the mud as it dries into bricks.
In addition to this he also worked on spray painting the gas tank for the van. Since he had it off, he wanted to treat it for rust. On Saturday he discovered what the problem was, a busted wire on the fuel pump. For this we are thankful, the mystery is solved.
In the morning I worked on my compost. I made compost on Saturday but only got the box about 3/4 filled before I quit for the day. I went out this morning before turning it and added some more starter mix into the secondary box. Then I turned the main box over on to it. Hubby came to help me with the last quarter of the job because I was waning from the heat.
I had to go to town after lunch...but by 4:30 I was back outside. I am afraid I probably didn't get as much done as I might have on a cooler day. I mulched part of a row, I power hoed between two rows, I dug out some cantaloupe and watermelon plants hidden in the grass. I treated squash plants with Diatomaceous Earth. By 8 pm the heat was getting to me. I was whooped tired and almost blue because of fatigue and the heat. I did the end of day chores like collect up various things that needed to be brought in for the night, I watered the rhubarb starts, the flowers and herbs, and then headed round to get my mints for our nightly medicinal tea. I found the house door locked because our darling daughter was out squashing shield bugs, not her favorite chore but she is good at the job and was recruited by her dad. So I sat on the front step for a while hoping some family member would take pity on me and unlock the door.
After a little while, I got tired of feeling sorry for myself and I went and got the key from the bug smasher!
On a positive note, there are little green bean plants popping up in the rows!!
