After six and half inches of rain within a short amount of time the mud got mudder! This past week we had no rain so we began the clean up process on Monday. As the week wore on we kept working and the mud kept drying, until yesterday in some areas the top soil had dried into brick.
Hubby tilled. We have three different tillers ranging in size from a small hand held model to a small tractor with a 3 point hitch 33inch tiller; with a large Troybuilt in between. He has used all three this past week and without them we would have lost the whole garden.
I weeded around the plants and side dressed many with our last batch of compost.
BTW, our current batch of compost is cooking nicely. We are hoping it will be finished in a day or two. I have about used up what I had stored.
We have also been burning and working on that old crib barn. Gradually, it is coming down. It is a nice diversion from weed pulling. We have found some useable pieces of wood for herb boxes and lots of pieces that will make walk ways for the muddy pathways in the garden.
Hubby is still hunting rabbits, so much so that he stayed out until almost dusk last night...He said he missed but this morning I saw a large tuff of rabbit fur so something didn't miss, maybe a coyote got it. Makes less for our stew pot but I am thankful. As soon as I got the beets freed from the grass, a bunny got in there and decided to help himself to my precious beets.
We have about ten in the freezer, waiting for me to try out a recipe from that French cookbook I got the other day!! In the past, I have not minded letting the bunnies have a little here and there but this season they have been ruthless in my garden eating down entire rows of cabbages, tomatoes, and most particularly the beets. About two weeks ago, I got feed up with things getting munched down to the ground overnight. So I asked Hubby to declare war on the little fur balls full of what was to be my produce!!
We watched our rhubarb be almost destroyed by voles last summer and then these bunnies this year....I am learning to think less like a soft hearted child and more like an old timer.
I will share the recipe with you if it turns out well.
