With a bit of this and that back at home, our guests arrived—my father-in-law’s nephew and wife came by for a quick visit. It is always a joy to see them just because they are kind and caring people that always encourage us. They could not stay long and we understood that they needed to hurry on to their next destination, but we were thankful for the few short minutes they took to visit. My father-in-law has always been very fond of this couple and fortunately, he was lucid and able to appreciate that they had stopped to visit.
It was sprinkling as they left and it was enough to wet the plants in the garden and since it is best not to pick the plants with moisture on them…I decided I wanted to go to thrift stores. We are planning to attend a WWII re-enactment the end of Sept and plan to go as a vendor. So I was looking for cheap period correct fabrics, trims, etc. Often I find these things in thrift stores…so I gathered up my chicks and off we went. Of course we found other things too. But overall, it was an enjoyable outing and we didn’t spend too much….
We came home and were planning to eat early but at the last minute I decided I needed to go out and pick beans. (again!) So we did that for about an hour…
We ate and then we had my birthday.
Mom had sent in a watch. (I think she remembered my birthday because my youngest daughter reminder her the other day while they were shopping.) I was kind of hoping to get my Christmas gift from last year which is a $50 gift card from the local grocery store, but as of yet, I have not gotten it. She told me about it back at the beginning of Dec last year… and the other day I asked about it….and she jokingly asked if I wanted it… I suppose she will give it to me this year for Christmas :D
But then that is kind of how it works with gifts from Mom. I have story after story about my birthday and Mom. (I am sure my siblings do too, but this is my blog so you only get my stories.) I am actually pleased with the watch, it arrived on time, it fits, and thus I get to keep it instead of her returning it and my never seeing hide nor hair of the exchange. I didn’t expect a gift from her and so it was doubly a nice surprise.
My youngest who is always about gifts and making every day special got me some special trinkets not the least a box of grain free snacks that she made with her loving hands and set aside just for me in a special tin.
It was a beautiful box….wood and rich in color. When you opened it had special sliding hinges, not the cheap kind that you know are going to bend and break…. And it only took a split second for me to realize that this was a knife box. A beautiful knife box…not some light weight cheapy looking thing. As I unpacked it, I realized that the knives inside were not going to be second rate either. About three or four years ago I asked Hubby for a good Chef’s knife and when he saw the price we settled for something a whole lot cheaper. It has been sufficient but it is poorly weighted which makes it dangerous if it slips while in use. Recently, I have been using it less and less because my hands do not feel strong enough to safely use it with any speed.
I cook three hot meals a day and if I am in the kitchen I usually have a knife in my hand. These will not go unused and they will be cherished for the rest of my life.
I laughed and said this makes me a real Chef, I now have my very own special set of knifes!!
